Florida Crash Between Worker Bus And Semi
In Fort Meade, Florida, one person was killed and almost a dozen more were injured after a bus and semi-tanker crashed head-on in Polk County on US-98. The bus was carrying 38 grove workers just after 6 a.m. on April 3, 2023, when it had crossed the centerline and struck a semi-truck head-on. Based on statements from the sheriff’s department, the workers in the bus were traveling to harvest strawberries in Plant City. The tanker was carrying almost 10,000 pounds of unleaded gasoline and had sustained a small leak. One worker lost their life in the incident, and nine others were transported to various hospitals in the area, including Tampa General Hospital, Lake Wales Hospital, Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, and Sebring Hospital. The driver of the tanker was ushered to Bartow Regional Medical Center with less severe injuries.
In every vehicle accident that happens, it can result in devastating injuries and life loss. With the incident described above, it’s sad to realize that it was a hardworking group of people who were traveling on their way to perform difficult labor that most of society doesn’t want to do, but is necessary to enjoy fresh fruit and produce that the natural world has to offer us. For reasons that are unknown, the bus driver had crossed over and careened head on into the semi-truck. This group of people had come to work for farmers who are unable to recruit people to do the work of picking strawberries and other vegetation. These are vulnerable individuals who did not deserve to have their life affected or lost.
